A rollicking literary pub crawl rolling from Long Island, NY to New Orleans and points in between, as journalist, author and editor Brian Clarey cracks wise on Botox babes and breaks bread with street people and washed-up celebs, extols the joys and perils of fatherhood, hones his craft at the "all-night grad school" — the bars he tended, where he learned the tricks of the trade.

The Anxious Hipster and Other Barflies I've Known eBook Brian Clarey

Everyone has a story to tell. That is the easy part. The challenge is telling it WELL. The author needs a strong narrative voice that grabs the reader by the metaphorical throat and transports him into the world that is being conjured. And this storyteller MUST NEVER LET HIS READER GO; MERCY IS NOT AN OPTION! The author's narrative voice must possess that certain type of magical charm which prevents the reader from placing down the book he/she is reading. Characters, plot, setting and themes are all equally important. But it's the author's voice that is screaming to be heard in the hopes that someone is "listening."

In the prelude to his debut THE ANXIOUS HIPSTER AND OTHER BARFLIES I'VE KNOWN, author Brian Clarey writes, "So pull up a bar stool. Have a drink. I've got a great story to tell you."

An understatement indeed. Clarey tells more than a single great story. His collection of tales, musings, and misadventures is an eloquent travelogue of his experiences as a journalist, a bartender selling his wild oats in New Orleans, and a nostagic traveler reminiscing about his family roots in Long Island.

The book is broken into 8 parts, with each part composed of chapters that are, at most, only 2-4 pages long. This structure blends easily with Clarey's fluid writing style where the reader can read the book in 5 hour sessions and the experience feels considerably shorter than that.

His stories change in theme from the "unique" celebrities he has met and interviewed, his powerful descriptions and thoughts of Post-Katrina New Orleans, his beautifully sentimental tales of his Italian-Irish family in Long Island (written like literary postcards---my favorite part) and powerfully ending the book with two tales: one of death (regarding his brother-in-law) and one of life(comparing his family to a sacred peach tree he has at his home).

Brian Clarey is an extraordinary writer who has the power and eloquence to branch off into writing full length novels, especially detective noir fiction---his vivid descriptions of New Orleans and the characters do possess a gritty edge. We can only hope his next literary endeavor will come soon.

The Anxious Hipster and Other Barflies I've Known eBook Brian Clarey Reviews

Such a fun read, it's funny, quirky and gives a great visual with every short story, I cannot wait to see future books from Brian Clarey!
If you are thinking about buying this book, you should!
It has its funny moments as well as sad moments. It tells about real life people and real life situations that go on with everyday people. Its real & is spoken from the heart. Brian Clarey is outgoing, & tells it like it is.
I would recommend this book to everyone is who interested.
Brian has a vision and a wonderful way with words that I really enjoy. He takes you on little adventures... "ordinary" places and people made extraordinary by how he paints the world around him.

I like the news-clipping / short story aspect to this book. It's easy to fit a story or two into a hectic working-mom lifestyle. While being a "quick read," it's intelligent and often thought-provoking, which is a nice balance to the chicklit also found on my nightstand.
This is a true story.

I dated Brian Clarey in the 7th grade. While he is no beast, I was not in it for for his looks - he was hilarious and passed me really funny notes in our dorkathon "enrichment" class (this was the 1980s - texting has ruined the art of note writing). His humor and writing have only gotten better with age.

This book is great because each short essay stands on its own, but it also all hangs together. Buy it for all the people you know who can only read for 10 minutes at a time or those who can read a whole book in half a day.

I'm not saying all of these nice things just because I'm in the book - check out page 123, people! I'm saying all of these things because if a book can impress a narcissist like me, it can probably impress anyone.
Having lived in New Orleans, and frequenting many of the same haunts as Brian, I found the stories poignant and funny. Almost anyone will relate to at least one story in this collection. Running the gamut from young dummies drinking till they pass out, and the point in life when adulthood yanks us out of familiar surroundings, to the sad and wonderful people that we all meet along the way. One of the most entertaining reads I have experienced in quite some time.
The stories Clarey tells, sometimes hilarious and sometimes sad, are always evidence of his keen observations. Besides describing incidents he witnessed occurring in bars where he was a patron or bartender, he can also tell an interesting story about his jeans, or a tree in his yard. To work a bar for a number of years in well known establishments, it helps to have a way with words. To write feature columns for many years it is a must. I thoroughly enjoyed Clarey's stories from his youth, barfly period, and becoming a responsible husband and father. Through all of this he somehow became a darn good writer. Barkeeper, make mine a double.
When I receive this book I won, I thought "Oh, No! I don't even want to read this!" I had read the last part of the title..and Other Barflies I have Known.
Relax. It isn't that offensive.

His entries are very interesting. They cover a large variety of events that will make you laugh, shiver and cry. It is done very tastefully which only exemplifies
profanity and explicit sex is unnecessary in the real literary world. (There were only a few instances profanity was used at all so needed to be eliminated totally.)

The entries a short and to the point but yet very interesting, funny, informative and touching.

I would love to add this to my collection but instead will donate it to the library because I cannot loan or recommend literature that I find offensive at all, therefore will not keep it in my collection.
I did, mostly, enjoy reading it. Thank you for offering it for a giveaway.
This review is voluntary and it is an honest review.
